SEPTEMBER 2019 

Wednesday, 11th September 2019: Combinatorial Esters Workshop [Open Laboratories Programme] 

19 students in Y13 from St. John the Baptist School, Woking, synthesised different esters during a morning workshop in the teaching laboratories. The students used NMR, IR and melting point data to determine their starting materials, as well as analysing the yield and purity of their products. Oxford Chemistry worked with Katey Thompson, Head of Chemistry, in the organisation of this event.  

 

Friday, 13th September 2019: Combinatorial Esters Workshop [Open Laboratories Programme] 

21 students from Uppingham School, Rutland, synthesised different esters during a morning workshop in the teaching laboratories. The students used NMR, IR and melting point data to determine their starting materials, as well as analysing the yield and purity of their products. Oxford Chemistry worked with Chris Birch (Head of Chemistry, Uppingham School) in the organisation of this event.    

 

Tuesday, 17th September 2019: EUNOIA Academic Talk [Inspire Programme] 

Y11-Y13 academic award holders at Bloxham School, Oxfordshire, heard from a member of Oxford’s Department of Chemistry about their research and career to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Dr Simon Floate, Head of Chemistry, in organising this visit.  

 

Friday, 20th September 2019: University Open Day [Aspire Programme] 

An opportunity to find out more about the Chemistry course from tutors and current students, as well as the Chemistry Teaching Laboratory (CTL) team. Course specific talks at 11:00, 14:15 in the CTL Seminar Rooms, with a lecture-demonstration at 15:00 in the Inorganic Chemistry Lecture Theatre.  General Open Day information can be found here: http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/open-days-and-visits 

 

Monday, 23rd September 2019: Forensics Workshop [Open Laboratories Programme] 

20 students in Y12 from Wallingford School Academy used a variety of analytical techniques to identify components in a mixture during a morning workshop in the teaching laboratories. Oxford Chemistry worked with Helen Grindey, Trips Coordinator, in the organisation of this event.   

 

Tuesday, 24th September 2019: Academic Talk and Laboratory Tours [Inspire Programme] 

15 Senior High School students from the Israel Arts and Sciences Academy visited the Department of Chemistry to tour the Chemistry Research Laboratories and the Chemistry Teaching Laboratories as well as heard a short talk from Professor Darren Dixon highlighting current research. This visit was part of the students’ week-long tour of the UK focused on the history of Chemistry. Oxford Chemistry worked with Dr Guy Ashkenazi in organising this visit.  

 

Monday, 30th September 2019: Cough Sweets Workshop [Open Laboratories Programme] 

40 students in Y10 from Headington School, Oxford, determined the concentration of dye required to give cough sweets their characteristic colour during this morning workshop in the teaching laboratories. Afterwards, they had a Q&A with three DPhil students about their current research and their career trajectories. Oxford Chemistry worked with alumnus Liz Rossington, Teacher of Chemistry, in the organisation of this event.  

 

OCTOBER 2019  

Tuesday, 1st October 2019: Science Careers Talk [Inspire Programme] 

80 students from different year groups at The Warriner School, Bloxham, Oxfordshire, heard from members of Oxford’s Department of Chemistry about their research and career to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Dr John Mileham, Head of Science, in organising this visit.  

 

Tuesday, 1st October 2019: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Attain Programme] 

15 post-16 students from The Bicester School, Oxfordshire, took part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils also gave a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Science Teacher Joss Currer in organising this visit.  

 

Wednesday, 2nd October 2019: Science Careers Talk [Inspire Programme] 

100 students from different year groups at The Warriner School, Bloxham, Oxfordshire, heard from members of Oxford’s Department of Chemistry about their research and career to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Dr John Mileham, Head of Science, in organising this visit.  

 

Monday 7th October 2019: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Attain Programme] 

30 students in KS4 from The Buckingham School, Buckinghamshire, took part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils will also gave a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Science Teacher, Dr Sue Coomber, in organising this visit.  

 

Wednesday 16th October 2019: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme] 

60 students from Y9-Y12 in Radley School, Oxfordshire, took part in a series of Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshops, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and its applications. The workshop included hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils also gave a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Dr Oliver Choroba, Head of Chemistry, in organising this visit.  

 

 

NOVEMBER 2019

Tuesday 5th November 2019: Lecture-demonstration on ‘The Chemistry of Bonfire Night and All Hallows’ Eve’ [Inspire Programme]

Saskia O’Sullivan (Educational Outreach Officer, Oxford Chemistry) and Tim Harrison (Director of Outreach, Bristol ChemLabs) co-delivered a lecture-demonstration on the chemistry behind key components of Bonfire Night and Halloween. There were flashes, bangs and ghoulish delights as the pair unlocked the reactions and chemicals involved in two of our most popular cultural celebrations.

 

Wednesday 6th November 2019: Combinatorial Esters Workshop [Open Laboratories Programme]

10 students from Oxford Spires Academy, and 20 students from King’s Education, Oxford synthesised different esters during a morning workshop in the teaching laboratories. The students used NMR, IR and melting point data to determine their starting materials, as well as analysing the yield and purity of their products. Oxford Chemistry worked with Darcie Tyler Henley (Head of Key Stage 5 Science, Oxford Spires Academy) and Pushpalata Chaure (Head of Science, King’s Education) in the organisation of this event.  

 

Wednesday 20th November 2019: RSC Top of the Bench Competition [Aspire Programme]

60 students from schools in the region competed to become ‘Top of the Bench’ in a practical task, followed by a communication competition.  The theme of this year’s event was based on the International Year of the Periodic Table. This event was arranged and run in co-ordination with Susan Rudlin (RSC Thames Valley Local Section).

 

 

DECEMBER 2019

Friday 6th December 2019: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Attain Programme]

20 Year 13 students from Oakgrove School, Buckinghamshire, took part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils also give a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Rebecca Beagley, Subject Leader for Chemistry, in organising this visit.

 

Thursday 12th December 2019: Combinatorial Esters Workshop [Open Laboratories Programme]

30 Year 13 students from Bartholomew School, Eynsham, synthesised different esters during a morning workshop in the teaching laboratories. The students used NMR, IR and melting point data to determine their starting materials, as well as analysing the yield and purity of their products. Oxford Chemistry worked with Nicola Malik (Head of Key Stage 5 Science, Oxford Spires Academy) in the organisation of this event.  

 

Monday 16th December 2019: UV-Vis Workshop and Chill Out Challenge

30 students from Oasis Silvertown Academy, Newham, London, took part in a workshop focused on analytical chemistry and practical investigation. Oxford Chemistry worked with Richard Barlow in the organisation of this event.  

 

 

JANUARY 2020

Monday 20th January 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

20 Sixth Form students from Cottesloe School, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 0NY, will take part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils will also give a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry is working with Grant Brockwell in organising this visit.

 

Friday 31st January 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

23 Year 13 students from The Ridgeway School, Wroughton, Swindon, will take part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils will also give a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry is working with Claire Hockin in organising this visit.

 

 

 FEBRUARY 2020

Tuesday 4th February 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

21 Sixth Form students from The Warriner School, Bloxham, will take part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils will also give a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry is working with Head of Science, Dr John Mileham, in organising this visit.

 

Wednesday 12th February: Fragrance Chemistry

30 students in Year 12 from Brampton Manor Academy, will synthesise different esters during a morning workshop in the teaching laboratories. The students will use NMR and IR to confirm the identity of their starting materials, as well as analysing the yield and purity of their products. Oxford Chemistry is working with Lewis O’Shaughnessy in the organisation of this event.  

 

Friday 14th February 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

29 Sixth Form students from the Royal Masonic School for Girls, Rickmansworth Park, Hertfordshire, will take part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils will also give a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry is working with Melissa Knight in organising this visit.

 

Friday 28th February 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

15 Year 12 students from The Radcliffe School, Milton Keynes, will take part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils will also give a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry is working with Yan Mallett in organising this visit.

 

MARCH 2020

Thursday 19th March 2020: Schools Chemistry Conference - Spring 2020

Open to Y10-Y13 students and their teachers interested in finding out more about the cutting edge research happening at the Department of Chemistry. Sixth Form students are welcome to attend unaccompanied by a teacher.

The programme comprises:

13:30 - 13:45  Registration and Welcome

13:45 - 14:30  Chemistry: The Interdisciplinary Science. Academic talk by Dr. Nicola Farrer, Wellcome Trust Career Re-entry Fellow, on her groups' work on 'Metals in Medicine'.

14:30 - 15:00  Plastics from another Perspective. Academic talk by Wouter Lindeboom, current PhD student in Professor Charlotte Williams’ group (tbc).

15:00 - 15:15  Break with refreshments

15:15 - 16:15  'A Chemical Delight' - lecture-demonstration by Tim Harrison, Bristol University.

16:15 - 16:30  Departure
