SEPTEMBER 2020

Wednesday 30th September - VIRTUAL AUTUMN CHEMISTRY CONFERENCE

Open to Y10-Y13 students and their teachers interested in finding out more about the cutting edge research happening in the field of Chemistry, and hosted online by the Department of Chemistry, University of Oxford.

 

The online programme comprises:

13:40 - 13:45  Join online.

13:45 - 14:30  Chemistry: The Interdisciplinary Science. Academic talk by Dr. Nicola Farrer, Wellcome Trust Fellow, on her groups' work on 'Metals in Medicine'.

14:30 - 15:00  Plastics from another Perspective. Academic talk by Wouter Lindeboom, current PhD student in Professor Charlotte Williams’ group.

15:00 - 15:15  Break 

15:15 - 16:15  'Gases in the Air: Understanding Atmospheric Chemistry' - lecture-demonstration by Prof. Dudley Shallcross and Tim Harrison, Bristol ChemLabs.

Monday 12th October, 10.30-11.30: Chiral Chemistry Workshop

This workshop focuses on the 3D shapes of molecules, what the word ‘chiral’ means, the importance of chiral molecules in biology, and about the resources available to research chemists looking at proteins. You can find more information about the workshop here, and book a place here.

 

Thursday 15th October, 16.00-16.45: Ask a Research Chemist, Week 1

KS5 Chemistry students are invited to sign up to a series of enlightening talks over the coming Michaelmas Term 2020.

Students will have a week to watch the talk, which will be posted online, reflect and note any questions they may have, read any material that has been recommended, before joining a 45‑minute online live Q&A session with the researcher presenting the talk.

The Q&A sessions will be held on Thursdays from 16:00-16:45 in order to minimise disruption to the school day.

Students may attend without a teacher, provided we have a teacher contact and the student signs up with a valid school email address.

Please note, places are limited to students from state schools, particularly those working with disadvantaged pupils.
