DECEMBER 2019

Friday 6th December 2019: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Attain Programme]

20 Year 13 students from Oakgrove School, Buckinghamshire, took part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils also gave a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Rebecca Beagley, Subject Leader for Chemistry, in organising this visit.

 

Thursday 12th December 2019: Combinatorial Esters Workshop [Open Laboratories Programme]

30 Year 13 students from Bartholomew School, Eynsham, synthesised different esters during a morning workshop in the teaching laboratories. The students used NMR, IR and melting point data to determine their starting materials, as well as analysing the yield and purity of their products. Oxford Chemistry worked with Nicola Malik (Head of Key Stage 5 Science, Oxford Spires Academy) in the organisation of this event.  

 

Monday 16th December 2019: UV-Vis Workshop and Chill Out Challenge

30 students from Oasis Silvertown Academy, Newham, London, took part in a workshop focused on analytical chemistry and practical investigation. Oxford Chemistry worked with Richard Barlow in the organisation of this event.  

 

 

JANUARY 2020

Monday 20th January 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

20 Sixth Form students from Cottesloe School, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 0NY, took part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils also gave a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Grant Brockwell in organising this visit.

 

Friday 31st January 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

23 Year 13 students from The Ridgeway School, Wroughton, Swindon, took part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils also gave a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Claire Hockin in organising this visit.

 

 

FEBRUARY 2020

Tuesday 4th February 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

21 Sixth Form students from The Warriner School, Bloxham, took part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. Oxford Chemistry worked with Head of Science, Dr John Mileham, in organising this visit.

 

Wednesday 12th February: Fragrance Chemistry

30 students in Year 12 from Brampton Manor Academy, synthesised different esters during a morning workshop in the teaching laboratories. The students used NMR and IR to confirm the identity of their starting materials, as well as analysing the yield and purity of their products. Oxford Chemistry worked with Lewis O’Shaughnessy in the organisation of this event.  

 

Friday 14th February 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

29 Sixth Form students from the Royal Masonic School for Girls, Rickmansworth Park, Hertfordshire, took part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils also gave a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Melissa Knight in organising this visit.

 

Saturday 15th February 2020: Chemical Clocks

45 students in Year 9 from various schools investigated a clock reaction in a series of three workshops being held in the Department of Physics. Oxford Chemistry worked with Kathryn Boast in Oxford Physics in the organisation of this event.  

 

Friday 28th February 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

15 Year 12 students from The Radcliffe School, Milton Keynes, took part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils also gave a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry worked with Yan Mallett in organising this visit.

 

MARCH 2020

 

Wednesday 4th March 2020: Identifying Unknowns [Open Laboratories Programme]

25 students in Year 12 from The Compton School, Barnet, undertook a series of investigative tasks to identify unknown compounds in an afternoon workshop in the teaching laboratories. Oxford Chemistry worked with Dr Ana Hastoy from Christ Church College in the organisation of this event.  

 

Wednesday 11th March 2020: Combinatorial Esters Workshop [Open Laboratories Programme] and Introduction to Analytical Chemistry [Inspire Programme]

31 students from Harlington Upper School, and 8 students from Abingdon School synthesised different esters during a morning workshop in the teaching laboratories. The students used NMR, IR and melting point data to determine their starting materials, as well as analysing the yield and purity of their products. Harlington Upper School students Oxford Chemistry worked with Mark Simpson (Abingdon School) in the organisation of this event.  

 

Friday 13th March 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme] – Part I

10 Year 13 students from Oxford Sixth Form College, will take part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils will also give a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry is working with Heine Van Zyl in organising this visit.

Unfortunately this event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

 

Friday 13th March 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme] – Part II

24 Sixth Form students from Wykham Park Academy will take part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils will also give a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry is working with Gina Willcocks in organising this visit.

Unfortunately this event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

 

Tuesday 17th March 2020: Chlorine Chemistry

40 students in Year 12 from various schools will investigate chlorine chemistry in two workshops being held at Balliol College. Oxford Chemistry is working with Pravahi Osman at Balliol in the organisation of this event.  

Unfortunately this event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

 

Thursday 19th March 2020: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) [Inspire Programme]

27 Year 13 students from Akeley Wood School will take part in a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshop, covering the theory behind spectroscopy and hands-on use of IR equipment. DPhils will also give a brief history of their academic careers to date. Oxford Chemistry is working with Usha Koshal in organising this visit.

Unfortunately this event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

 

JUNE 2020

CANCELLED Monday 15th June 2020: RSC STEM Spelling Bee

Oxford Chemistry is holding the South Region Final for the RSC Spelling Bee. Each school is invited to bring a team of three Year 7 students to compete to become the Top STEM Spellers of the South! Wednesday 30th September - VIRTUAL AUTUMN CHEMISTRY CONFERENCE

Open to Y10-Y13 students and their teachers interested in finding out more about the cutting edge research happening in the field of Chemistry, and hosted online by the Department of Chemistry, University of Oxford.

 

The online programme comprises:

13:30 - 13:45  Registration and Welcome

13:45 - 14:30  Chemistry: The Interdisciplinary Science. Academic talk by Dr. Nicola Farrer, Wellcome Trust Fellow, on her groups' work on 'Metals in Medicine'.

14:30 - 15:00  Plastics from another Perspective. Academic talk by Wouter Lindeboom, current PhD student in Professor Charlotte Williams’ group.

15:00 - 15:15  Break 

15:15 - 16:15  'Gases in the Air: Understanding Atmospheric Chemistry' - lecture-demonstration by Prof. Dudley Shallcross and Tim Harrison, Bristol ChemLabs.
